Young and growing trees fix carbon from the atmosphere. Logically using paper and wood products actually helps to reduce the greenhouse effect! VIDA AB and its daughter company Vida Paper AB have a negative carbon footprint. How positive is that? It is reality that our production cycles bind more carbon from the atmosphere than are emitted as carbon dioxide. Yes we really do reduce greenhouse gases!
VIDA Paper is a completely integral part of the VIDA sawmill group. Our close proximity to the sawmills and the raw materials they supply for papermaking give us an edge that is difficult to match.
Swedish forests are growing in more ways than one. In Sweden we plant more trees than are felled and overall our national “biomass” is getting larger. Logging, the production of forestry products and their distribution emits less carbon dioxide than is bound by the growing and expanding forests.
The growth of Swedish forests, our biomass, exceeds what is being taken
from them. Our logging, production and distribution emit less carbon
dioxide than is bound by the growing forests.
Production at VIDA Paper’s integrated pulp and paper mill uses everything, nothing is wasted. Any part of a log that cannot be used for timber products is ultimately recycled, creates energy, feeds the land or if us used as bio-fuel. The waste heat from the pulp production is exploited in the production of paper. Closeness to our raw materials also means that we can minimize emissions due to transport.
At present, around 25% of VIDA’s transport volume is moved by rail and this percentage will gradually increase. For each cubic metre, transported by rail, instead of by road, carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by 300%.
We are also reintroducing organic compostable material to the forests as natural fertilizer and we are developing our own energy company, VIDA Energi, handling all organic residues and producing emission-neutral energy. Besides heating our plants, this energy is also used by many local homes in heating. We would like to stress; absolutely nothing gets wasted.
All this adds up to VIDA Paper’s carbon footprint being, measurably, amongst the very best when tested against other European paper manufacturers. Carbon Neutral in commercial terms CARBON NEGATIVE in reality! |
